Brand New Mercedes 722.3 trans problems
I just installed a brand new from Mercedes 722.3 transmission.
I cannot feel the shifts at all. It flairs for a few seconds from 2nd to 3rd. First thing in the morning on my slight incline in my driveway it creeps up the hill. If I did it in reverse it flies up. It seems to be shifting into 4 at about 30mph. Manually shifting it works fine. Reverse is strong. I have adjusted the vcv valve as well as the bowden cable to factory spec. I do not know the modulating pressure. Any help would be appreciated. |
i think you have to adjust the vac modulator i dont know if they come adjusted from the factory.
turn it clockwise 2 or 3 clicks. or if you have the new mod where you dont have to pull the pin then just turn it up a bit. i bet that solves the problem lemme know wat happens ill be done with the same install tonight |
Thanks I’ll let you know.

So I took it back to the shop that installed it for me armed with the pages from the factory manual regarding set-up, they were able to adjust the modulating pressure properly. They discovered my VCV on the side of the injection pump was not functioning properly and replaced it with a slightly used one that they had in stock.
Shifts now like it should. I ordered a new VCV from Mercedes that I will be installing. |

Do you suspect that you unfortunately replaced the whole transmission when really all you needed to replace was the VCV?? |
I hope not. Vehicle has 290,000 miles on it So it was probably time anyway. I was able to keep my old transmission so perhaps I will rebuild it I don’t have it for back up.

Additionally the front part of the transmission was pouring out fluid and I think the front main pump was about to go as there were pieces of aluminum as well as the shimmering of aluminum in the oil when I emptied the pan.
