What Transmissions Options Were Available For a 1999 W210 E300 Turbodiesel

I am new to the MB world and recently purchased a 1999 E300 Turbodiesel with 147000 miles. Took a train to Fort Worth, TX. met the PO at the train depot exchanged cash for title and car and headed back home 350 miles. I am wondering what transmission is in the car? The bezel around the shifter indicates 4 speeds, 1st., 2nd., 3rd., 4th. and then D. 4th. and D are on the same gate. Any transmission information would be appreciated. Thanks Kirk T

I purchased a 1998 E300 turbo diesel new. It has the MB 722.6 5 speed automatic. It is an absolute beast of transmission.

Its a 5 speed automatic.

the 4 markers are for "holding" the transmission in a certain gear - obviously you would never want to hold the transmission in highest gear thats why there is no 5 mark.
