W124 steering gear replacement

All the videos and post I found are with the engine out. Is it possible to remove the steering gear with everything in the engine bay in tact? Looks like a *****

Yeah, it'll come out. Depending on which engine you're working around it can be a chore.

I was able to do it on my W201 but its not super easy, I'd assume you'd have some more room on the W124. I would have preferred not but I had to remove the pitman to get mine replaced. When you do the coupler I had to put the coupler on the steering shaft first and then install the box, otherwise I was collapsing the steering shaft.

Make sure it doesn’t fall on your head when you’re laying underneath the car and remove the last bold in your yoga pose. Use some rope to secure the box, the thing is heavy.

How much time should it take to remove? Is this an all day thing or all weekend?

It can be tricky to get the spline and box back together and you will most likely need an alignment afterwards, with that in mind it's an all day affair.
