Fuel Gauge Problems On 96 C280

all of a sudden my fuel gauge has a delay before it goes to the right level... just yesterday it used to pop up when i had the key in the 2 position now it doesnt pop up until the car is in D... is this a preview of things to come?

REPLACE THE FUEL TANK SENDING UNITS. TIPICAL PROBLEM ON THE 202'S.

how much does this part cost... and is it easy to do yourself... Also the light doesnt come on when the needle is low so I don't know if this a problem with the sensor or the gauge itself...

thanks again

It could also be the needle sticking to the "stop." My temp gauge and tachometer won't register (in hot weather mostly... summer) until I whack the top of the dash with my hand. MB used a paint that turned goopy (sp?) in hot weather!

I don't think its the paint b/c it randomly will go up and down while i drive... usually goes up at a stop and then starts heading down when i start going again

its not very hard to do. some special tools needed, but that could be worked out without them. they have different prices.they both run about 180.00. there also might be a connecting pin or wire modification.

is there anywhere i could find some directions for this and the part numbers? and also is this most likely what the problem is... i was hoping it would be something easier, but i guess i am out of luck...

Yes, sounds like the fuel level sender.
This is a very common problem... I think the repair is something like $200. Maybe you can get them to pay for part of it. I'm not sure if this is a DUI or not.
Good luck,

It think it is a DIY repair, it is not too hard to do yourself.

I occasionally have the problems with my fuel gauge, but it works 99.9% of the time, so I am not concerned yet.

As stated before, this a common problem caused by the fuel tank sending units, there are two and both need to be replaced. When I looked into the costs, I found that the fuel tank senders are a dealer-only item and the cost is a little under $200 for both of them.

ok today the rain stopped for a little bit and now my fuel gauge is perfectly fine...... i am pretty confused.... it has worked all day.... could the rain have had something to do with it????????

anyways i am happy i dont have to spend 200 bucks

thanks for all the help
