Question 722.3 automatic shift

Hey, asked for help on another forum and they couldn’t help me with this. I bought a W124 1988 a month ago, and it’s my first automatic car so I’m not used to dealing with these. The problem is that the car seems to start on the third gear rather than the second, and it doesn’t downshift automatically at all even if I hit the pedal hard. Checked the throttle cable and the transmission cable next to it and they seemed to be fine. There was something that looked like a relay next to the throttle cable, and it had a button which apparently is supposed to be unpressed when pressing the gas pedal. The throttle cable was so tight that it wasn’t touching the button at all, so I losened it a bit, went for a test drive with high hopes and was unfortunately let down because that button didn’t seem to affect the transmission.
Any ideas? I don’t want to pay 700€ for a professional to fix it if it’s something simple. Thank you.
