Hi , I have a 1986 560sl and my problem is that when I put it in drive , it spits coughs and dies. When in neutral , it purrs. I changed all the filters I could think of , but it did not make a difference. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It sounds as if the idle speed is not staying up. Most likely an idle speed actuator or the control unit for the idle speed.
