560SEL engine/trans into a 450SL

What parts are needed to replace a 350SL's 4.5 and 3spd AT with a 5.6 and 4spd AT from a 560SEL beyond:
- exhaust manifolds (will ones from a 450SL or 380SL fit the 5.6?)
- shifter gate plate (are 380SL's the same as 560SL's?)

Will these 450SL parts work with the 5.6:
- driveshaft?
- motor mounts?
- transmission mount?
- shift linkage?

I'll be having a custom exhaust made - what else am I forgetting?

Thanks,
MDN

How about computer and electronics. I don't know squat about the 560 but I know it is not a D Jet.

Assumptions

I'm assuming that the engine is complete (computer, harness, FI, air cleaner, starter, etc.), so it's the less obvious parts around the engine and behind the trans that I'm unsure about.

Don't forget a bung in the custom exhaust for the O2 sensor.

I think K-Jet systems run on higher fuel pressure than D-Jet systems. You might need the fuel pump/accumulator/filter assembly from a K-Jet car if yours is a D-Jet.

You mght also need the gauge cluster from a later car for the idiot lights. The 350 has a mechanical oil pressure gauge and possibly a mechanical temp gauge as well. The 560 engine will have electrical senders.

Are you sure the swap is cheaper than buying a 560SL?

Are you sure the 350 has a 3-speed? The 3.5l M116 in US trim came with a 4-speed in all applications I'm familiar with. Or is your 350SL the US version that came with an M117?

Mine is a '72 US 350SL - 4.5 (117) engine with 3spd AT (torque converter type, 722). I really just want the 4spd AT, but it looks like I have to take the 5.6 engine, too, since the newer trans won't bolt up to my 4.5 engine.

Thanks for the tip about the gauges.

How about a Euro 4-speed AT for your year or generation?

I only know what I've read - that MBenz put the 3-spd with torque converter behind the 4.5 because they didn't think the (then current) 4-spd AT with fluid coupler was up to the task.

Do you think it would hold up? And bolt up? It's sure a simpler swap.

What I've learned so far

I've put together all the info I've received so far - it's at www.carcentric.com/MB2MBswap.htm . If you spot something in error or can add to the knowledge pile, please email me at my350SL@yahoo.com or post a reply here. Thanks.
