722.6 RPM bouncing while coasting

Hi All,

I have a new to me 2001 SLK 320 with 52,000 miles on it. I love the car and bought it to enjoy on nice days. I have put about 1,000 miles on it since buying it and it runs well. In that time I've changed the transmission fluid+ filter and done other preventative fluid changes etc.

The issue: Coasting (no pressure on the throttle at all) @ approx 40 MPH (say down a long hill) the rpm gauge will bounce up and down from idle to about 1500 rpm. It is as if the torque converter is engaging and disengaging. There is no noticeable feeling felt in the car, no juddering or jerking) just the rpm needle bouncing up and down several times. As soon as the speed drops below or above 40mph it stops.

You can see a video on YouTube here: https://youtube.com/shorts/qe5BKvH0BQc?feature=share

The car upshifts throughout all the gears well and downshifts through them fine as well.

The transmission fluid looked good when I drained it. Not bright red but not burnt or dark brown and there was not an excessive amount of metal in the pan.

My daily driver is an Audi with DSG so the shifts feel glacial to me but I suspect that is just the nature of the transmission.
