Early W124 Headlight Identification

My EDM imported 1985 W124 has a little 3-position dial beside the headlight switch. I believe it is identical to one I had in a now-sold EDM 1987 S124 that changed the pitch of the headlights. In my current car it does nothing so far as I can tell.

The 1985 has sealed-beam lights. People talk about "Euro-spec" lights as not being sealed beam.
  1. Has somebody taken out the original headlights from this car?
  2. If I was to convert this back to Euro headlights, what parts do I need to check for in the car? I guess there should be a vacuum tube running from the in-car dial control to the vicinity of the headlights?
  3. I may have the option to buy back my old 1987 for parts. Would everything headlight-related be compatible?
