W210 E430 exhaust question
There is a rattle order my car; a muffler ‘clamp’ broke near the front of the transmission.
Had a mechanic weld it together, and you guessed it. The dang thing broke again. Could this be an engine mount issue? It broke, and is close enough that the two parts hit, causing the rattle noise. Please advise how I can tell if my engine mounts require replacement. 142,000 miles 2002 E430 While driving there is no rattle, only ar idle. Thank you. Have a great new year. |
I'm skeptical unless I had the car on a rack and could confirm with my own eyes that there is a broken clamp because the 210 cats are known for breaking up inside and rattling at idle. I could be wrong though.

Interesting - the cat
I'll get a picture tomorrow
Would a "broken" cat - cause a CEL? BTW - when the car is running - there is no rattles, and the engine sounds fine. Will get the picture. thanks |

Finally took picture and found error

So, no engine mounts needed. (The engine sits steady.) |
Now - do I have an exhaust leak? The black suggests I do.

Is there a clamp, I may purchase, to replace the one that is rusted?
Do I need to take it all apart and insert a new exhaust gasket? Would a muffler shop fix this without welding the muffler? Thanks again |

The part in the red circle is composed of 3 pieces, P/N 210 492 71 41 (bracket), P/N 210 492 72 41 (bracket), and P/N 202 990 03 10 (bolt). The brackets fit above and below the pipes and the bolt clamps them together. The part in the green circle is actually partially or completely missing. I believe that part is on the driver's side pipe. The P/N is 202 492 02 81 (sealing ring). To replace it you will likely have to separate the front and rear sections of the exhaust system. Separating the front and rear will mean the passenger side seal, which seals a "slip joint", will probably get damaged and need to be replaced. P/N 126 997 00 41 (slip join sealing ring). The bolts for these joints are M8 x 53mm P/N N910 143 008 017 and the nuts are P/N 000 990 32 50 (M8 nut). The system is quite heavy and very awkward to work on without a lift. A good!! muffler shop or M/B independent shop should be able to help.

You are on the money
I went to the Dealership, and they got me the clamp and the exhaust gaskets (rings).
Just before I installed all, I was rear ended - Mr. Insurance company totaled the car. :-( Now looking for a new. Yes, the issue was a rusted joint and the part listed by vince was "on the money"!!!!! Thanks all |
