Head Gasket Sealant ?

Although this is not a MB question, with all of the aluminium heads running at high temps, what better forum to pose the question: What kind of sealant should I use when I change the head gasket on my '86 Alfa Spider? I have never done a head gasket before, but I really want to learn how to do this. (and I would much rather practice on the Alfa than the MB).

I believe that in general, the head is torqued down onto the metal head gasket to such an extent that you don't need (or want) any sealant. All you need to do is make sure you have clean shiny (and flat) metal surfaces.

Not so easy to determine flatness, but if you have no reason to suspect warpage it shouldn't be a problem. If you had head gasket leakage it may be an issue - I think most people have a shop determine flatness in that case. Your block probably won't warp. :)

Most Alfa's use a WET sleeve engine so sealing technology can be different. You should always follow info that the OE GASKET manufacturer supplies.

"MOST" head gaskets on Benzes require NO extra sealant & can create problems if they are used!

Of course that doesn't apply to the new M112 & M113 engines as they are glued toghther with Loctite 5900.
