I have a 1993 300SD with 119K miles on it
and it appears that the steering box is
starting to leak (very modestly).

What do you recommend for a fix? Do you
think that it is just the gaskets and can
they be replaced w/o removing the box?

There is an idler arm at the bottom of the
box that would probably have to be removed.
Any suggestions on removing and replacing it?

Usually if they leak, you have to remove the sector and reseal them internaly. This is an advanced level repair only and should only be done by the best of technicians.

Are you aware of rebuilt units that
are available for the w140 or should I
just replace it with a new one?

Do you think that this is something that
requires immediate attention? There seems
to be very little, if any, noticeable loss
of power steering fluid in the reservoir.
The only obvious sign is a wet steering box
when the panels are removed.

If the steering sector is leaking and you dont want to pay the money to have some one repair it then you can always get a used one through Atlanta Stuttgart Auto Parts.they dealer world wide and i have been doing business with them for over ten years.Speak with Brent. But your best bet is to have a qualified Tech do the repairs if you choose to fix it.

If it is a minor sweat and it doesn't bother you, do not touch it!! If you do want to go after it, a tech can re-seal it for you if he has the special tools.

I agree with Benzmac do the resesl job on
your power steering gear box.
Find a good MB tech to do the job,A used steering gear box is your last choice to pick
what happend if the used gear box you put in your vehicle that leaks too ?
You will have to pay double labor to take it back out.
Good luck !
