instructions on rear brake pads /87' 300E

I went to replace my rear pads on the car and it wasn't like the front. how do you get the old ones off?

It should be very similar, remove the two pins and spring clip. push the pistons out, and replace the pads. thats all I had to do on my 1992 300CE. and I have done brakes on many cars, and almost all of them have been that simple. apart form rear shoes found in drum brakes which I always hated...

Losening the emergency brake cog wheel first, usually in one of the lug holes on the left hand side wheel.
Mercedes in latter years seems to use two kind of calipers, one utilizing bolts, the other is pins that get hammered out.
There is a site, that has pictures showing the procedure. Let me try to find it. I am sure someone around here is familiar with it.

At this site, on the top of the page click on the DIY tab and browse down the page to brake pad

If you are just doing pads, as opposed to rotors, you should not have to mess with the parking brake adjustment.

Be sure to have a good mask to avoid breathing any asbestos dust - it flies as you tap the pins out.

...asbestos?

I didn't think anyone made asbestos pads for over a decade! Wouldn't think his pads would last that long anyway.

Metallic or semi-metallic compounds are used in newer pads. And hence, more prone to squealing, more brake dust, etc. etc.
