Transmission swap info needed
 

Can a 722.323 (4-spd AT) transmission from a '86 560SEL be used with a '72 4.5 engine (in a '72 car)?

The '72 4.5 engine is a 117.982; the '86 5.6 engine (that came with the trans) was a 117.968. Same engine family, at least.

I don't know if the bellhousing bolt pattern, input splines, and output flange of the two transmissions are the same or not. The shifter assemblies are different and the odo/speedo sender types are different, but I can see ways around those issues.

Just in case a simple bolt-up isn't possible, how could that trans be "adapted" to work with the 4.5?
