I recently purchased an 87 190E 2.3 with 56k and really love the car! I changed the oil, plugs and air cleaner. I have noticed that when I take off from a standstill a little smoke appears but once tavelling along there is none. When I went to get it inspected it failed the emissions part, it was about twice the limits. It seems to be running rich at idle-like it is loading up. Any Ideas would be appreciated! Thanks

Since the CIS-E computer is responsible for the fuel mixture, I would think that one of the sensors that are imputs to the computer isn't doing the job. The most likely failure is the oxygen (O2) sensor. Have the lamda control system tested.

Pleas give a complete emmisions test result.
ie. co hc o2 as these all have different meanings. Just because you failed emmissions test does not mean that it is a rich mixture. |
I do not remember exactly the co or hc. I looked at them briefly. Would the O2 light on the dash come on if it was bad. Is the O2 sensor accessed from under the car? Thanks!

No the O2 light would not come on. Yes, the O2 is under the car just ahead of the cat converter.
