On a 260E where is the termalstat and is it easy to get to. Is it located at the end of the radator hose connected to the engin block.
Friend benz is over heating. She took it in to a shop and they said $920 to replace the termalstat, radiator, and fan. They said the fan is not running fast enough. I am surprise they did not say to replace the pump also (why stop short just replace the entire cooling system). ben |
Hi Ben:
Do you know if the radiator is corroded or clogged? If it is, that is why they recommend changing it. If the fan is spinning slowly, you should be able to change just the clutch which is available on this fastlane site at $150.00. The water pump must still be in good shape. It is easy to get to the thermostat. It is right on top and the best description I can give you is it is attached to the end of the top radiator hose in the black covered housing. It looks like half of a soda can. You will find three bolts to unbolt and the thermostat is in that housing. It shouldn't take you more than five minutes to change the thermostat. Make sure the car is cool before replacing the themostat. Hope this helps. Aloha, Eric |
If the radiator is clogged the fan clutch will not lock up as the heat doesn't pass through the radiator right. The clutch has a bi-metallic spring in it that "locks" it up. However they wear out just like everything else. Quick check for the radiator, get the engine hot, shut it off and feel across the center (the core) and check for even heating, if you find a cold spot, it's plugged.
