Vacuum Modulator 190E

Hello,
I disconnected the vacuum modulator from my '91 2.3, and it seems to shift better than if it was connected. I had the "harsh" 1st shift and "flaring" on 2-3 and 3-4. With it disconnected, I get a slight harsh 1st, but all other shifts are nice and firm, the way I like it. My question, is it OK to leave the VM disconnected? Will any harm be done to the transmission? I did plug the vacuum line to the manifold, so no leaks.
Thanks,
Randal
