190E: Climate control - The trick to removing it?
I need to remove the 190E Climate control, in the center of the dash. Whats the trick to removing it? The radio and panel are removed.
I doing this because the right-front speaker isn't working. Trying to trace the wire.

Hey Haasman! It's me again. To go to the right speaker it's easier to gain access to it by removing the glove compartment. To get to the left speaker, you have to remove the instrument cluster.
To remove the climate control unit, first pull out the two center vent louvers with a pair of long nosed pliers. Remove the two phillips head screws on the floor of the vent housing. These screws secures the center console. The center console can now be pulled down just a bit for you to pop out the wood trimming around the blower switch. But before that, pull out the blower switch knob. The blower switch will "not" come out with the wooden trimming. With this panel out, you can see metal tabs with a small hole in the middle on both sides on the upper portion of the control unit. With a two thin screwdrivers inserted through these small holes, pry the two tabs upward at the same time and pull the climate control unit out wooden trimming and all. If you have to remove the harness from the control unit, be sure to return the harness with the red band on the left side. You might as well check the bulbs on the blower switch and the push button control unit while you have everything apart. Have fun and have a great weekend!

Bernie,
Are you saying the center vent comes out first? That you pull it out THEN take the screws out? I see the two screws at the bottom of the vent. It looks like they are supposed to come out and then pull the vent out ... J

Climate Control Unit Removal
Removing the vent louvers will give you more room to pull the screws out. These vent louvers are just snaped in. The whole panel with the sun roof, power antenna, and rear defogger switches will remain. You do not need to take this portion out.
Good Luck! Let us know what happens.

thanks got it!
How do I get the whole panel with the sun roof, power antenna, and rear defogger switches out? Some of these switches don't illuminate and want to find out why.

No need to take the panel out. These switches have thin fiber optic cables originating from a bulb in the instrument panel. It's either the bulb is shot or the fiber optic cables were yanked out. Same with the rear dome light switch on the left side. You have to pull the instrument cluster out to check these bulbs out.
But if you really want to remove the panel, first you have to close the center vent by sliding the lever downward. There is an allen screw right above the knob between the grooves. I think it's a #3 allen. Not sure about that. Loosen that allen screw until it detatches from the vent door. There is a Phillips screw behind the upper left corner behind the defogger switch that connects the upper part of the panel to the dashboard. Be careful in this section as I had seen several of these panels break and crack(Talking from experience!). Pop the switch out, unplug the connection, unscrew the panel from the dash, and pull the whole assembly out. When you are done with the repairs, as the MB repair manual says: "Re-assembly is just the reverse of the above procedure". hahahaha!!!

Thanks again. It seems I have a couple but not all of the rockers that do not illuminate. Probably the fiber optic lines. I'll check 'em out. Maybe I can carefully remove the switches individually instead of the panel.
Back out to the car also with the volt ohm meter to see why the right from speaker doesn't work! Jeff
