M112 Harmonic Balancer

Does the early style harmonic balancer give advance notice of impending failure? If not, should an early style balancer be replaced immediately, regardless of mileage?

Is M-B handling prophylactic replacement on a good-will basis or do they wait until the balancer fails and eats the timing cover and oil pan?
