how to stop oil leak?

I have an oil leak from the fan clutch bearing bracket. When I replaced my water pump this weekend I took the fan bracket off too thinking a simple gasket of rtv was all that was needed to fix my oil leak, not true. Is the lower right bolt the only one that needs an o-ring to stop oil seepage? Is there an easy way? I'm only losing about a quart every 3000 miles but damn it makes a mess.

Thanx

Are you sure the leak is coming from your fan clutch bearing bracket? If you removed your belt tensioner, and you didn't apply sealant to the "Y" bracket (arrow in pic) when re-installing it, oil will leak from this hole.

Good luck!

thanks for posting the picture. Is this generally the same for a '91 300E or a '87 190E 2.3?

Haasman:

That diagram is for the 103 engine, which the 190E 2.6 has, so yes it is the same for both the 2.6 and the 3.0 (300E).

The 2.3 was an inline 4, so I'd imagine it would apply to your 190 as well.

The CD states to put sealant on both sides of the bracket hole. When I replaced my tensioner last week, I had oil caked along the bracket rail facing downward. I sealed it back up and no more leaking.

Good luck..

I followed the cd and did put sealent on the belt tensioner bracket. The leak is considerably less. I didn't have a new o-ring for the bolt (#4) that attaches the tensioner bracket. I used the old o-ring. I will get a new o-ring and do it again. Practice makes perfect!

i following this thread closely since i have developed
a leak following replacement of belt tensioner.
how do i get to the y bracket? do i only have to
remove the fan shroud? does bolt #4 only have the
o-ring? thanks

Joel:

I've never heard of that bolt requiring an o-ring, maybe the later 103 engine's in the 190 called for it, but I would imagine the black MB sealant would do just fine.

To access that bolt, you'll need to remove the fan shroud and fan clutch as well. The bolt is right behind the TDC sensor, and if you see oil in that area, that's definitely the spot it's leaking from.

Good luck!

paul - how do you take out the fan clutch?
looks like you have to take out the belt, too?

Bolt #4 has a larger shoulder than the other bolts. It will not fit in the other 3 holes on the fan bearing bracket. When I removed mine it had an o-ring on it that was of course hard as a rock.

Even if you put sealent on the end of the tensioner bracket, what keeps oil from seeping from around the bolt head? More sealent?

A washer:)

Mine had one built onto the bolt, but I also added a washer, and I haven't seen a leak.
