300e engine noise
I have fighting with this off and on for two months now. When the car is in gear with the brake on there is a slight tick sometimes almost goes away. when out of gear and the rpms go up it gets a little louder. If I rev it to 2 or 3 thousand rpm it is very loud almost sound like my neighbors ram deisel.
I have replaced the lifters and changed cam too. I have tried to narrowed it down with a stethascope, but can't find it. Sometimes when I rev it up, it almost sounds like something it rattling or banging around. Any input on this would be helpful. Thanks, Jim |

Your belt tensioner pulley damper (small shock absorber right next to oil dipstick) could be making the noise you hear. Check both the upper and lower bushings for wear

Thanks guys,
How do I test it? Is it easy to see if it's bad? Do you know the what the cost of a new tensioner is? Thanks again, Jim |

Yup... sounds like the top bushing of your belt tensioner damper is getting sloppy.
Here's a 25 cents fix. Insert an o-ring between the top bushing and the washer. This will pick up the slack in the bushing and stop the rattle. I did this 10k miles ago and it is still effective.
