When do we replace the shocks?(85 300d,83 240d)

I have an 85 300D and a 83 240D. Both have 260,00 miles on them. They ride well, and my front end alignment specialist says the shocks are okay.

But I'm wondering, I just redid the ball joints. What s the replacement interval for my shocks, particularly the fronts?

Also jsut how diiferent are normal shocks vice Koni's? I believe in using Great parts, but I cant gold palte these cars, my fiance will get p___ and my daughter wants to go to college soon.
