After having the engine rebuilt due to overheating when I start the car the coolant temp rises to 110 deg. and then down to 90-100 deg. and looses coolant. The heads were skimmed and new gaskets fitted during the rebuild. I have fitted a new radiator, and I have tried three Mercedes thrmostats!
Any ideas appreciated, Thanks. |

Do you know where the coolant is going? Is it coming out or being consumed? There is a block check tool that can be purchased at NAPA. It checks for hydrocarbons in the coolant. You open the coolant tank and put on the tool that has a chemical in it. As the engine heats up you pull air through it and if the blue chemical turns yellow, it has a combustion leak into the coolant. Where? That has to be determined.

The coolant is being expelled from the expansion tank vent when the radiator cap lifts as the temperature rises. Once the thermostat is open the temp returns to 90-100 deg. What is the circulation route when the thermostat is closed and could there be a blockage?
What or where is NAPA? Thanks. |

The cap is rated at 1.4 bar, have it checked if it is OK, you may need a new radiator or fan coupler.
