Removing chromed stripe on plastic side panels?
 

I have a -92 w124 with the plastic side trim panel on the doors and fenders and I wan't to remove them and give them a new coat of paint.

I figured out of to get them off the car without breaking anything but now I'm looking at the small chromed stripe attached to them, how do the clips for them work?

Is it a onetime deal so I have to buy new clips and just pry the old ones away or are there a secret trick to it so I can remove them unharmed?

Any pointers?
