Brake pad preference question
 

My Brake Lining light is On, on my 94 530iT(whose pads/calipes/rotors have been upgraded to those off a 95' 540).
I want to replace the pads ONLY with either PBR(Repco) Deluxe or Pagid.
Which would YOU use and why??
Requirements are low dust and absolutely positively must NOT squeal!

aldedmon, any luck in your search for low dust, no squeal pads?

My brake lining light just started flickering and I have the same requirments as you.

Is it important that the pads stop the car? This is generally my #1 requirement...

I read a blurb in an auto rag, many years ago. They were interviewing a German engineer - either MB or BMW, I forget which. He was commenting on the difference between European consumers and American. The Americans, he stated, cared only whether the brakes squeled, but not whether they were sufficient to stop the car. The Europeans cared only whether the brakes stopped the car, but not whether they squeled.

We have PBR pads on our 328i and now on our E320 wagon, extremely low dust, very effective braking, little to no squeal. I say go for the PBR.

The Pagid pads on the wagon (came with them) were squealing bloody murder; so off they came.

In June I put a full set of PBR deluxes on our 735i and used them in a driver's school--worked fine and less dust at the end of the day than one or two days' worth of normal driving with the OEM Benz pads. Last month put PBRs on the Benz--there might be a difference in stopping, but I would want it documented scientifically, because it isn't noticeable enough for me to really say. They squeal a teeny bit once in a while, but I don't care about that as much as saying bye-bye to all that dust. I made sure I used the MB grease carefully on the pads as per instructions.

You'll get as many opinions on pads as you will on oil.

It's been said that Pagid, Jurid; TexTar are OEM quality.

I went thru a squealing thing awhile back using two of the aforementioned. The cure was to buy the dealer pads. This doesn't necessarily work for everyone.

MBDOC once said that the number 1 complaint at his place was brake noise and he works at an MB dealership.
