94 E320 Wagon - How do I regain control of my intermittant windshield wiper?

My intermittant wiper setting is doing it’s own random cycling. Sometimes two sweeps, sometimes eight, sometimes it doesn’t work at all. Sometimes the rear wiper actuates, even though I’ve only set the stalk to intermittant. With 103k in the NE US it’s been used a lot. Is there anything else in the circuit that could cause the problem other tha the stalk? Can it be cleaned and reinstalled or should it just be replaced? Is it a repair shop procedure or can I do it myself? If so, how?

You need a new wiper combo relay.

I just replaced mine on my 95 C280, and it works great now!

On the W202, it controls the rear defrost, intermittent wiper, hazard lights, and turning indicators.

Dealer list was $150, and I got it from FastLane for $50!! SMOKIN DEAL!

Good luck.

You may also need a new combo switch. Mine is starting to go I think. Haven't replaced, but it involves removing the steering wheel and airbag I hear. Have to use caution not to blow the airbag. Probably by disconnecting the battery. Please let us know how this turns out.

I'm very interested too. Our intermittent has never worked since we bought the car last year. Also, where is the relay located?

The relay is located in the back half of the fusebox. You have to remove the fusebox cover to access it - about six phillips head screws, if memory serves.

Thanks for the replys.
Changing a relay is within my capabilities, but I'll leave the R&R steering wheel to my MB shop.
My Benz has to go in for R&R leaking steerig gear box. Hopefully, they can tell me if the wiper cure is stalk, relay, both or cosmic forces.
