better air intake hoses on my 500E? ATTN: JimF
Hey guys, after looking at JimF's website for the 5000th time looking for updates ;) I was looking at his pictures of his engine bay from the new no-touch tire car article. As I was looking I realize that Jim's air intake hoses are superior compared to mine. My air intake hoses are EXTREMELY bent up, beat up, barely staying on the airbox, I had called and talked to Phil about 4 days ago regarding getting new air-intake hoses for the car, but now that I see Jim's, I don't want to order basically the same ones I have now that are all bent, just not yet bent. Get what i'm trying to say? I feel if I just get the same hoses, they could end up easily bent again. Jim's look extremely stable. Heres a picture with mine:

And will they fit my 500E airbox? I hope so. Thanks guys! Btw, i would have inserted the img's into the post, but i'm on a java machine and getting all types of errors, someone can put them in their post if they want so people can compare easier :) |
trying to resurface this....

Sorry I didn't see the thread. . .
Here's the MB pns:
Driver side: 119 090 16 82 Pass side: 119 094 75 82 The difference is the driver's side has connection for the IAT. BTW, your pic did not show up but I think I remember that your tubes are what I call the 'padded' versions. Mine are plastic and they should fit your car. Don't you think? |
mine are like padded tubes...here
http://home.adelphia.net/~nychis/500...od/500E-25.jpg all bent up! yours..... http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MVC-040St.jpg so you think they'll fit? |
I don't know ?????
They certainly got to fit on the air cleaner side: but the question is will they slip over the air intake tubes??
I quess you are going to find out, one way or the other. |
true true, thanks Jim I appreciate it, I'll call up the dealership tomorrow and see what they say too. :)

Umm...the padded ones should not look like that at all. Both of our 500s have the padded tubes and they're as srtaight as can be.
I suspect that someone may have pulled the hoses off of your cars then mixed up the orientation and rather than carefully experimenting to see how they are SUPPOSED to go; whomever did the deed just forced them to fit. You should have no qualms about replacing the hoses with the padded OEM ones as they are manufactured to fit perfectly in the alotted space. Besides, they have an internal steel coil running through them to help maintain the shape. Kind of like the coil that's in a dryer vent hose. |
but they did get bent up, and i like jims. wouldn't they be just as good if not better?

Go with whichever one you want. I'm just saying that the OEM padded ones are plenty strong enough if you remove and install them with the appropriate amount of care. they don't have to treated like gold leaf. By the same token, you can't expect them to look pristine if someone just jams them back in any old way. If you're one the type of person who treats their car roughly, then by all means, get the plastic ones. however if you do things with a little extra care around your car, the OEM ones should, for the third time, be plenty strong enough. Personally, I think the hard plastic ones look cheaper than the padded ones. The bottom line is that there is NO functional difference between the hard plastic hoses or the padded hoses. You're just able to be more careless with the hard plastic ones. I, personally, am very careful around my cars. it doesn't mean I keep them in a glass box; I drive them, and I have no qualms about driving them hard. The difference is in knowing how to drive hard in a gentle way vs. driving hard in an i-don't-give-a-s%#@ way. the same goes for dealing with these hoses. if you just exercise some restraint and care with them, they should be fine. If you can't be bothered to take care of them, they'll get bent. It's as simple as that. In your original post you expresed some consternation at the fact that the hoses in your car were bent and you seemed to feel that straight replacements would not hold up as long as the plastic ones. I'm just trying to tell you that there's nothing wrong with the OEM parts at all and that your crushed hoses are more likely a result of someone being too lazy to handle them with the appropriate amount of care. |
fwiw-...I've seen many (many) of these M119 hoses in the condition of hedpe's.....and most likely appears to be due to the engine compartment heat/ turbulance/ removal-install effects over time (natural breakdown)
in other words, structure/ materials get soft over time and fail to hold the engineered shape hedpe- bring your car to the dealer and have them test fit JimF's style hoses prior to buying them (should be ok) best regards -fad |

Did you ever get the Intake tubes to fit?? I am looking at doing the same. Here's a picture of an AMG 6.0 engine with similar tubes. I don't know the part#'s though. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/attachment.php?attachmentid=24463 |
