I am aware of the timing chain issues with early 380's and I wouldn't consider one that wasn't converted to double row chain. It's just that I see alot of 84 and 85 380SE's for sale with low miles and was wondering about the gas mileage. I am also aware that a 380 will be somewhat of a "dog" performance wise, but if I want to drive a Hot Rod I can always drive my 560SL..

You should look into a 86 or 87 300SDL. They will get 25-27mpg on the highway, and have good power for a diesel.

the 380SE aint much of a "dog" performance wise......its good and so is the mileage. My car does 600km per tank highway.
