Doors and Trunk Automatic Closing

The mechanism that slowly suck the doors close on my 1998 S320 has stopped working on 3 of the doors. And, I notice that the the automatic button to open the trunk from inside the car has a slow-to-no response sometimes and I occassionally have to get out and open it manually.

Can anybody confirm what might be causing this problem? Have there been any recalls, etc?

Sounds like a bad vacume pump

Yep, definitely a bad vacuum pump or vacuum leak somewhere.

On my car, the pump is under the rear seat.

Ist of all, welcome to the forum!

RE: door closing issues with the W140, these are very common. There are 2 vacuum pumps: one to LOCK the doors (under the rear seat) and one to CLOSE the doors (in the trunk).

Do a search on "assist pump" and you'll get lots of useful info.

That's all I know about W140s!

Closing assist

Hi Claudette The closing assist pump on your car is located in the trunk, near the upper left side of the fuel tank. This may also be referred to as the "power locking" pump but it is only for pulling the doors and trunk closed. A quick diagnosis is sometimes possible by removing the fuse that supplies power to the pump. There is a small fuse box in the R/R of the trunk, found by opening the little door on the inner trunk panel. I think it's fuse #9 you want to remove and re-install, but check the fuse card on the inside of the door. You'll probably find that everything will work fine for a short time after removing and re-installing the fuse. This usually means the pump is bad. Let me know how it goes.
