Lookin for Hammer knowledge

I have an opportunity to buy a Hammer. I have not seen it yet but it sounds like it was about a 1990 560SEC style car with an AMG Hammer package. He said he paid nearly $200k for the car. He drove it for 1 month and then had an accident. The car was wrecked, but the engine and drive train are in good condition. The owner bought another 91 560SEC and was planning to transplant the engine into it. But it never happened. Now he wants to dump both of the cars. He tells me the engine is a 7.5 liter rated at nearly 500 HP. Aparently it will drop into the 91 560SEC car with no problem. I was thinking of doing the engine / drivetrain / suspension swap and having a real smoking car. I dont know what Hammers existed in those years.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what this car was / could have been and if the story he is telling me adds up?

Dave - I did not read through any of these posts, so I can't say what benefit it will be. Of course many won't discuss the same Hammer you're referring to. The titles may help point you in the right direction.

I am curious as to why many won't discuss the Hammer I am refering to.

Dave:

You mentioned an original sale price of about $200K. How many people would be familiar with a car like that?

i was young when hammers were popular but i do remember that hammer's were the ultimate.back then AMG was a company unto it's self.they would tune the benz's as they saw fit and i think they were after the ultimate mercedes with muscle.i think you'll find that their engineering was more driven by performance and quality than what AMG has become-which is a money making arm of mercedes.would i do this deal---in a heartbeat!!hopefully the price isn't too steep.let us know what you do

Whoa! I need more facts here...you've uncovered a rare, never-before reported version of the AMG Hammer!!

The original Hammer was based on the 1987 300E, with the 5.6-liter W126 engine dropped in and bored out to an even 6-liters. 32-valve heads were grafted on and 365hp came out of it all. Good for 180mph, if you had the roadway.

AMG attempted to bring a limited series production to the States in answer to all the magazine hype the European car received. So a softer version was actually assembled Stateside with the 5.6-liter engine and was still called a Hammer. Of course, the full 6-liter version could be had for more money...around $160,000. Yikes!

But 7.5-liters and 500hp? Send me pictures

You will find much more to read about the real Hammer in the article archives at need2speed

Cheers,
