bouncing speedo

good afternoon,

I have an 85 190 e 2.3 4v. the needle on the speedometer bounces quite a bit up until about 50mph (at which point it calms down and works quite well). Is tightening up the needle an option or is there a quick diagnosis/fix/likely thing to check?

One unrelated question, when the car is cold, for the first shift of the day from first to second, the car shifts back and forth in a studdering sort of way, first then second then first then second for good. This problem never happens when the car has been so much as driven around the block; it is only upon the very first shift of the day. What should I keep my eye open for here?

Thanks in advance,
CDT

Lube the cable. While your there, make sure the cable is in decent shape, what you are describing sounds like a binding cable.

Are you absolutely definite the shift problem is not actually a very heavy misfire, I have one when it's been raining and the car shudders heavily. At first I thought it was a transmission problem, although it only happened under load and at low revs. I haven't got round to doing plugs and leads yet.

misfire

interesting, I am not at all sure that this is not a misfire. In fact since mine does this primarily after it rains (like yours) I wonder... two things I can say are I am fairly confident that my fuel pressure regulator needs to be swapped out but that rotor wires cap plugs have just been changed (I swapped em) within the last month. I'll write more when I swap out the FPR. Thanks for the insight.
