fuel filter replacement
 

I want to change my fuel filter on my c280 1994.

I was going to :

Take out the fuel pump relay (the green one next to the tire-correct?)

Run it until it stalls out

Then disconnect the neg battery cable

Open fuel filler cap

Replace filter

Are these the correct steps? Working with gas makes me nervous, you know...since I could explode and all that. So I want to make sure I'm doing it exactly how I should.

I dont know if it is called for but on my 300E I took some heavy duty clamps and crimped the hose also.. Just a thought I think if you remove the gas cap this will release some of the pressure, I learned this the hard way.

hrrm....I replaced the fuel filter on my 300E by just opening the filler cap. The filter leaked gas when I loosened it, but I placed an oil pan underneath, and it only got my hands dirty. There really wasn't much fuel leaked out, and I don't think you will need to clamp any of the hoses shut...

Nobody here has changed their own fuel filter on a c280? C'mon???

This may sound strange but I see on performance products web site that the 1994 c280 uses 2 fuel filters. Where is the other one?

Did the fuel filter on my W202 C230, everything you have planned sounds good.
Didn't however remove my fuel relay.

I did use hose clamps.

I did need to use rubber gloves and carefully a flat thin edge to pull/pry the rubber lines of the fuel filter necks.

The old hose clamps I cut off with a very sturdy clipper. and had purchase a handful of new hose clamps.

OEM hose clamps use a special pliers to unhook, the new hose clamps I purchased used screws- like a radiator hose clamp.

taking out the fuel pump relay will not release pressure, it's just an electrical connection. Opening the fuel filler cap will.
The disconnect of the battery will prevent sparks from the fuel pump, in case you get a screw driver to the terminal, so thats important.
I also clamped the main fuel hose on my W126, but I replaced fuel pumps etc. together with the filter. For the filter alone, there shouldn't be much fuel, but then again, at todays prices, a clamp might not be a bad idea.

Has any of you bothered to read pass the first post? How about the dates? I am only asking if the '94 c280 has two filters. Sorry- but really come on here.

A certain amount of confusion is what one should expect in resurrecting an old unrelated post rather than starting a new one. In any case I believe the premise of your question is flawed - Performance Products shows only one filter for the car, with a VIN split.

My only concern with clamping off the hose is that if the rubber is old, dry, or both, it just might split. Better to fashion a plug from plastic or cork and plug the end, rather than squashing the hose. Battery disconnect & cap removal are excellent ideas.

Ahh yes deanyel you have shed light on my misconception. My apologies to the previous posters. I will do further investigating with my vin #'s etc. However this is a good thread for "how to do". I guess starting a new thread would be helpful also so more hits come up with a search for fuel filter replacement. Thank you. I am learning about this new to me '94 c280 so please bare with me and the off track questions.

I have done this- first get the clamps, disconnect the battery first- then wear old shirt you may have to toss- losen the clamp first- then clamp hose lines, buy new little clamps and make sure you have scissors or equivelent to clip frayed edges. a pair of cheap sunglasses or goggles will also help when it squirts fuel all over you. Put screw driver, scissors or anything in a can or something so you are not stranded without getting your tools in the event of major squirting...trust me on this one...and finally- when you are all finished, drive the car, then park it- go and look to see if there are leaks while running- I didn't do this, until someone told me I had a line of liquid I was leaving - silly but true. But on my SL I took it and paid to do it- too much hassle- plus gas burns until you wash it off!

does removing power cause the radio to need recoding? also if the rubber lines are dried and cracking, change 'em. you're down there anyway, so why the hell not.
