1989, 300E, 112,000 miles, Engine will start but run only a few seconds, after repeated attempts engine will run but very rough. After depressing the accelerator several times, the engine will continue to run. Once the engine is running, the idle is very low 500 - 600 rpm, if the accelerator is not depressed, the engine will continue to die. Once the vehicle is on the highway, it seems to run well.

Check the fuse in the overvoltage relay. Have you jump started the car lately? If so the over voltage relay can be damaged. To access it you will have to pull the black plastic panel loose behind the battery. Behind there is a silver relay with a 10 amp fuse in the top of it. If the fuse is blown, replace it.

What should I do to prevent relay damage when I jump start the car?

Nothing really. You could take out the battery and charge it then reinstall.
