Blinkers and horn not working. Why?
 

I've got an '86 190 on which the blinkers and horn have simultaniously stopped working. The emergency blinkers however are fully functional, so I know it's not a bulb or something wrong with the emergency blinkers switch and probably not the relay either. What can it be? Is this something that a novice like myself can diagnose and repair?

check ALL of your FUSES.

it may be as simple a fix as that.

Had the same problem in a 420SEL fuses looked good so I proceed to rip the car apart to no avail.Turned out to be a fuse that looked fine and tested fine with a test lite but was no good.

To make a long story short change the fuse with a new FIRST than take it fom there..........Hope this helps

I've replaced the appropriate fuse and it still hasn't helped. Guess I could try to replace it yet again. :confused:

Sounds like I'm coming close to needing to tear apart the steering column. But I don't dare, so I guess it's going to the shop. <sigh>

Make sure all the terminals are clean on the fuse box (Do it for every fuse, you'll feel better) - clean them all!

Could it be the relay for the flashers?

On my 300E I had the same problem. These two items are on the same fuse. After a few fuse replacements that lasted what seemed like random time intervals, I began an investigation and it turned out the horn wires were rubbing against the air conditioner condensor fins. When you beeped the horn these wires would short, depending on how well they were making contact at the moment and blow the fuse. Pulling them away from the condensor and wrapping them in electrical tape did the trick. Hope this helps and good luck, Jim

Well, we don't have AC in our little sweetie, but the idea of a short does sound likely. When I initially checked the fuse it was definitely blown. Although, when I changed it, it didn't solve the problem.

I will clean the fuse contacts as suggested and replace the 8 amp fuse again. I hope that a short didn't fry something else - but that's what fuses are for, I guess - - to prevent something important from getting toasted.
