83 240D Shifting into Reverse binds very badly.
My 1st, 2nd and 3rd Gears shift effortlessly.
MY Reverse shift makes me nervous. When I have to shift into reverse, the shift is very ugly and bumpy. I feel some resistance and most of all I feel some thing isnt mechanically right, as if there is a lot of friction and binding going on, or something is happening that shouldnt be happening. My slave cylinder is new and works fine and is adjusted very well. All 3 engine mounts are brand new as is the transmission mount. I think the problem is in the 3 linkages that control the shift. Do they need adjustment? There are 3 linkages; 1, 2 and 3 counting from the front of the manual transmission to the back that can be lengthened or shortened. How should I adjust them? My service CD has no transmission coverage. http://mywebpages.comcast.net/rtc9/BENZ.html |
have you considered the shifter bushings? possibly they need replacement. there are a total of six. three small and three large, if memory serves me.

Carameow,
The linkages might need adjustment. The Haynes manual covers the procedure and a drawing of the dims. I am currently at work and my manual is at home. I could do one of two things to help you; 1. Give me a fax number and I'll fax it to you or 2. I'll try to post it here some how. Option 1 works best for me. thebern |
