Synthetic transmission fluid

I am going to service my automatic transmission and would like to convert it from normal ATF to Red Line synthetic automatic transmission fluid. The car is a 1963 with a DB4 automatic. Are there any pros or cons on this subject? I am not versed on why one transmission gets Dexron and another gets something else! When I go to an auto parts store, even they can't decide which I should use.

I don't have any special knowledge, but I know several experienced Mercedes mechanics (who I trust) who recommend using synthetic ATF over conventional. They recommended Mobil1 to me, but I'm sure Red Line is comparable.

synth trans fluid

Gregg, With that year of a car and the miles, I personnally with stick with an non-synth trans fluid, I don't believe a synth fluid would improve anything, but may cause problems. I'm sure Mercedes does not approve a synth for your transmission. If you decide to use Red Line call their technical help center, I would guess they would tell you to change fluid/filter, then change again in a few thousands miles. But again my thoughts would be stay with the MB fluid approved. timreid
