Does anybody have this problem?
Since i replaced the original exhaust system on my'82 380 SL the car send a black dust all over the vehicle.
I see not black smoke from the muffler , only the smell. The new exhaust system is a single pipe with a small converter not doble pipe as the original. Tune-up and new injectors been done. What could be the problem? Thank you for any help. Rick _________________ |
I'm inclined to believe the tune-up and injectors are the problem, and not the new exhaust system.
If the fuel mixture is too rich, excessive carbon could making it past the converter, if you are smelling a gas odor. The particulates are to small to notice just by looking at the exhaust being emitted from the pipe, but collectively, carbon deposits will eventually collect along the rear surfaces of the car (bumper, trunk, rear apron, etc.) |
How many miles on the new exhaust system? Have you driven it at long (20-30 miles) intervals? Some new systems have coating on the pipes which burn off rather quickly. If you drive it and heat it a few times you should be O>K> I mean you shouldn't have any new exhaust burn off as a problem.
I also think that any black carbon gas smell from the exhaust is likely to be with the tune-up/injectors. Are they original bosch injectors with new boots and seals/rings? The other option is to have the exhaust analyzed. There should be a state inspection station or private shop that could shed some light on this for you. Good luck. Keith D |
