Hi,

Just wondering. I recently was told by a friend that a salvaged 600SEL is around. The car was rear-ended and is totalled. The guy will give me a good price on parts, and I wanted to get the V12(which has about 35,000 KM on it) and swap it into my '92 400SE. Is it possible?? If yes, what things do I have to look after?? Thnx.....

P.S. The front of the car is totally un-touched, however, from rear doors back is totally gone.

Andy;
I'm sure the swap is possible, however I don't imagine it would be easy.
You're probably looking at major surgery to the front of the E, not to mention countless little details once the motor was in there, i.e. rerouting and relocating wiring, vacuum lines, fuel line etc.
I've seen a BMW 318ti with a V12 shoehorned in the engine bay. This was done by a tuner in Italy, and as I recall the whole front end was basically replaced.
If you were to pull it off, it would be one hell of a car.

Just to point out one thing...Andy has a W140 S-Class...not an E class...

Andy,

I beg you, please don't try it. First off, we have so many problems with the V-12s, that all your hard work would probably result in your being unhappy with the results. If you are hell bent on a 600, then get a 'real' 600 as in the SWB powered by the mighty M-100 6.3 litre engine. Better acceleration at both top and bottom end than the V-12--and much less troublesome!

The "real" 600 would be nice. Too bad it's not exist in Canada. :) Oh, one more thing, does SWB(W140) actually faster than LWB(W140)?? Or they are about the same??

P.S. If I do have the V12 stuck in my car, I would leave my 400SE badge on the boot..LOL :)

Akry,
For the amount of re-engineering necessary to do the V12 it might just be easier (dare I say economic?) to buy a Brabus 6.0 or 6.5 engine (both M119 based V8's) for the car and not have to redo everything. I know the 6.0 V8 is good for at least 420HP and bags of torque. Don't have 6.5 specs offhand but you could bet it is similarly awesome.

Just a thought...Lee

PS then you could rightfully put one of those little black "B" badges by the 400SE on the decklid.

SWB is no faster than the LWB model. SWB and LWB of course meaning short and long wheelbase. The only difference between the two is 4 more inches in the rear seat legroom department.

Thnx for the replies. Guess I am better off for Brabus/Lorinser/AMG engines. :) Thnx again.

Happy Motoring....
