OVP Question

My 88 300SE has been having stumbling at idle and initial acceleration problems. I've gone through the serch function and it appears this could very possibly be an OVP problem. I checked the fuse and it's fine. My question is, before I go out and buy a new one to see if this is the problem: Is there a way to open the OVP and clean out the contacts? I've located the OVP and removing it should be simple enough but I'n not sure how to or if I can open it once I get it out. Any ideas? I don't want to start prying at it and destroy it.

Thanks,

Ron B.

If the OVP relay is bad then the ABS light will come on. Not sure if ABS is fitted on your model though and other things could be the cause. Does removing the fuse when the engine is running cause any change? If not the relay is suspect. If you do get some kind of change then you can assume it is working at least some of the time.

I successfully opened up the relay and ran a hot soldering iron over each of the joints on the pcb inside. That fixed the problem.

use the search engine on this website by typing in ovp or overvoltage protection relay.

your answer will be found in a post that i remember reading ,whereby some one opened the relay and used a soldering iron to fix some faulty connections within the relay.

Thanks for the repies. My ABS light does come on sometimes. I had the ABS system checked and was told it was in proper working order. Then I read posts about the OVP making the ABS light come on and it seems that's my problem. I'll check the search function again. Open the relay and clean it.

The problem with mine was a dry joint on the pcb. No amount of cleaning will cure that, you'll need the soldering iron as I said.
