Hello Everyone,
Has anybody installed the Renntech Oil Cooler Kit ($1,250), Transmission Cooler ($745) or Oversized Radiator ($1,360) on a W140? Does the parts shop have equal parts for less money? Who are the OEM for these products? David Allen or other W140 owners, if you are out there please throw in your ideas also.

Thanks
Fred

Is your car having cooling problems?? I have seen no 140's with problems other than the thermostat.

Hello Benzmac, sorry for the delay but went away for the weekend. During drive to destination noted that the outside temp was about 95 and the temp gauge sat at the 100 mark on the highway with speed ave. 75 to 85. After getting off the highway in the city with the A/C on the temp gauge went right below the next higher white line. Is this normal? I was under the impression that a cooler engine temp would create less stress on the engine and the oil. Is this correct?

Thanks
Fred

I installed a renntech radiator on one of my customers cars last year, a 93 modified 500e.
The radiator was a nice high quality unit, but a snugfit. It is thicker than the stock unit and must be carefully installed as there is not much space between the fan and radiator anymore. This car saw alot of track time and also competes in the "one-lap" event. There weren't any problems with the stock cooling system, this was installed to get ready for future hp mods and my customer is doing the car in "stages".

I also had the E60 that Hartmut(owner of renntech)drove in the "one-lap event" this year at my shop and I had a chance to look it over closely. The trans cooler is really "cool" having a temp sensor and electric fan mounted on it on the pass side of the front bumper and the oil cooler is on the drivers side. Unless you are making alot of hp or racing your car, these coolers are not needed for a stock daily driver.

Alain V,
Just curious...how did the Renntech radiator work on that 500E? My 92 500E runs hot (and hence a little off its game) in the ultra hot/humid Atlanta weather. Benzmac can confirm that the OEM cooling system is in great shape. Even so it still gets pretty hot under traffic or track conditions. (105-115 C) We are just looking for ways to keep the engine temp down (read: under 100 C) when outside temps are 95-105 F in traffic, or while waiting in line at the strip/track. Did you ever find out how well the tuner radiator worked for the 500E? Were the 93 car's "mods" just chip/airbox/ASR defeat or 6.0 engine? Ever do any other supplemental engine cooling stuff to W124 M119's or 500E's?

Thanks...Lee

The 500e I work on currently has ASR defeat switch, renntech limited slip diff, chip, ramair box,cat back exhaust, renntech valvebody in trans. It also has 600sl brakes, koni shocks, renntech front swaybar, ducted brake cooling system, stainless brake hoses, and 18" carrlsons w/pilots for street use and 17" toyo proxes dot race tires for track use. Originally the owner was planning on installing a 6.0 renntech v-8 in the car and the 5.0 was running a little hot on roadcourses in july/aug temps. After installing the radiator and redline waterwetter he told me that the car doesn't get hotter than 100c anymore at the track. He just recently bought a new toy a RUF turbo 911, for track events thus his 500e has been put back to daily driver status. Unforunatley, being in Kansas, there aren't too many people around here who "hotrod" their benzes. I currently have only three customers with "real" modified fast benzes,1AMG HAMMER,1500e,and a 190 16-valve. I have quite few (500e,C36 etc.) performance models that come in for service work, but most of these people don't use the cars or realize the potential of what they have.

Lee,
When I built the 190/5.0 I had a custom copper rad built to fit but had the same problems in mid summer with AC on. etc.
I went with a different size water pump pulley to pick up the flow rate and had a new aluminum radiator built by Fluidyne, which is in Cal. and Mooresville NC (stock car hdqtrs.) . It is far superior to Griffin which Renntech uses and less expensive. It is what is called a serpentine rad so the water passes three times across the core before returning to the block. It is a pure work of art and should be hung on a wall! All for $397 with custom fittings, one which I made from a block of aluminum for the metric temp sensor. The ends are beveled instead of square bent so water doesn't get trapped in the corners. They have 385 employees and ship commercial...20,000 units a week, and are ISO9000 qualified. If you're interested I can give you more info later as it is at my shop.

Tobias,
Now you have my attention. If you don't mind please send me the contact info and any other pertinent stuff. Thanks for the advice. It is at least worth looking into. Being able to keep a W124 V8 at 80-85C no matter the conditions would be worth mad HP in hot weather.

Thanks...Lee

Hello Everybody
First of all thanks for all the information, I am learning more about MB's than I could ever find out locally. Lee, I did a net search and found Griffin at www.griffinrad.com, any other aftermarket upgrade ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

The renntech radiator I installed was not made by griffin, It was manufactured by Ron Davis racing radiators in arizona. Ron's radiators can be seen on Tran-Am,NASCAR cars.

Lee,
Why are you up at 3AM on the net...can't sleep or fulfilling all our desires to know why our MB fails and how to fix it??

Fluidyne can be reached several ways:
In NC speak to Jeff or Mona at 888-FLUIDYNE.
In Cal. it is 800-FLUIDYNE
Internet is www.fluidyne.com
They do production for Ford but have a seperate division for aftermarket replacement
units for Camaros, Chevelles, Mustangs, etc.
They make air-air, liquid-liquid, liquid-air
intercoolers and now have a new 55mm multiport tube core. Their motto is 'Experience the Possibilities'

By the way there is a 92 500E, silver/black
for sale here for $29,500 if you know of a buyer.

And, by the way, the 190 is being redone very
shortly with aluminum heads and a five-speed
so I finally get an overdrive for interstate
use! 3700rpm at 70mph is a bit much but right on the power curve! Do you know of any
manual pedal clusters with m/c for sale?

Adios,
TobiasMB
