It won't start

For the first time in almost 9 years, my 1989 260E totally refused to start this morning. (mileage 240K). I drove the car all day yesterday and everything was normal.
Gas tank is 3/4 full.
I can hear the fuel pump running.
Battery is strong and turns engine fast.
Not a single explosion. It just cranks. and cranks and cranks.
Since it is quite cold here this morning, I will not be trying to find what's wrong with it by myself.. Towing truck is on it's way.
What's your diagnostic. I'll have it fixed (hopefully) tomorrow.
The bets are on.

Thanks guys: Tune up done 3 months ago(3000mi). plugs, wires, cap/rotor
Filled up yesterday and only drove about 80mi: Tank is at 3/4 full+
Gas filter and fuel pressure regulator also replaced 3 months ago.
I just checked the OVP fuse: OK.
Although I can hear the fuel pump running, it does not mean it actually pump gas. No smell of gas after tring to start for 1/2 hour. (Battery is getting weak).
My guess: ....fuel related.
Any more guess?

Check coil wire connection on both ends.

Test coil. (I don't know how)

Best of luck to you. Hopefully you'll nail it with one of the suggestions so far. ;)

Mr. BriBenz shoul add the title ''Master in Diagnostic'' to it's credentials.
The problem was a fried ignition control module.
Now tell me why I can buy a sophisticated Mother board for my computer for about $250. or so and this little stupid looking antiquated electronic gizzmo module dating back for the early 80's sell for something like $600.
