Transmission drain plug question?
 

Up under my 560sl last night and notice the drain plug at the bottom of the tranny was not flush and there was a little fluid on the housing. Does this plug screw or push in?

Screw in.

yep, it is a screw-in plug but don't screw it in!!
take out the plug and drain fluid. buy a new copper
washer then screw plug in.

been there done that. the old copper washer will
chew up the thread and will cause you major problem.
hope this help.

I believe a 5mm allen head will get it out and back in.

Maybe I'm missing something, feels like plastic?
 

Is it supposed to be metal or a plastic plug?

Admittedly, I didn't spend that much time with it but when I felt it with my fingers it seemed to flex, like plastic.

Not really interested in draining and re-filling, just want to be sure my drain plug is secure so I don't get that "big surprise."

All of the drain plugs on the 126 tranny pans I've seen feature a small round plug made out of metal. In the center of the plug, you should be able to fit a 5mm allen head wrench.

As was previously suggested, you may wish to remove it and replace the flat washer - available at local dealer. You'll drain approx. 3.5 qts of dexron and that's easily refilled thru the tube where you check the tranny fluid level under the hood. The actual amt. drained may depend on the previous content.
