Shift gate light..W124.....What type?
I have searched the archives extensively and can't seem to find what type of bulb lights-up my shifter gate. Do any of you know what type and wattage this bulb is? Thanks. I am taking her apart later to install my shift adapter and new shift know and would like to have the needed parts at the time of removal.
Thanks again, |
Its a small wattage special bulb from the dealer. I did mine recently and it is essential that you put the correct one in or it'll cause problems...it is not the same bulb that's in the vents though it does look the same...according to my guy in the know. I'm sorry I don't have the part number in front of me but your dealer or Partshop here will have it...like a buck or two. CANNOT be substituted with an AutoZone type bulb....but cheap enough from the OEM parts peoples.

Hi,
In the past few months I've ordered two bulbs for the interior - one for the shift gate and one for a dash vent, both were filled by the dealer as 000-825-00-94 which is a frosted bulb, 0.4 W 12 V, list price $2.50. |
I suggest you go with a non-frosted for the shift gate, because they're brighter and it needs to light up that whole row. The OE bulb for my shift gate was non-frosted -- but dash vents are frosted.
I bought my replacement at WalMart: GE# 74. Happy Holidays |
I have two 1987 300D's and both have the frosted bulb, maybe the later cars were different and used a non-frosted bulb.

I have only partial lit shift gate so I;ve also been thinking about looking at this.
How do you go about to get to it? Thanks |
Remove the ashtray metal insert.
Remove two screws that hold wood front. Remove two screws in back that hold ashtray to center console. Move off to the side. Pull up carpet in center console, one screw at edge of wood trim in center, remove. Remove wood trim. Access light bulb at base of shifter. |
Gary, actually with your 1995 I'm not sure what the different instructions are, your center console is not like the first 124's.
|
It may even be easier to do in the newer 124s...I just removed the 500Es storage bin (1 screw) and removed the wood consoule...the bulb I replaced was at top of shifter in a small plastic plug.
That's the part number I have too..I don't remember if the bulb was frosted but I know the vent one was. What is key is the low wattage. Here's a funny one (I didn't think so at the time)...when I did this it was apparent that the PO had spilled a cup of coffee and it had seeped all over under the consoule. I happen to HATE coffee and cleaning it brought the smell out and I felt like gagging. Whoever cleaned it up did a good enough job on the outside but...no wonder one of the window switches was twitchy. Took me a few days to take apart and clean up. Fun is... :) |
Well, I have all of my things together. Now I am just waiting for it to warm up a little before I go out and install the bulb along with my new shift knob and adapter. I guess I have spent enough at the local MB dealership because he just gave me the bulb. It's not frosted and is in fact a # 74. Thank you gentlemen :)

Bulb wattage in question....
I have an alldata account for my 94 E420. It shows a Technical Service Bulletin titled "illimination of Shift Gate too dim". It states the cause being "incorrect bulb (0.4W) installed". It states the remedy as "install bulb with 1.2W (clear).
Just thought I'd mention this, as I need to replace mine. |
i recently installed a 1.2 watt osram clear(non-frosted) bulb which i bought from the dealer.
mine is a 1993-190e-1.8-uk spec. |
Got part number 2721 Sylvania/Osram OEM from Checker auto parts for my 1988 300E, seems to work just fine.
