300E Throttle Linkage Lube
 

Have a 91 300E and wanted to lube the throttle linkage with ATF. Performed a search and there are many threads describing the procedure to lube but no hints as to where is the location of throttle linkage or what it looks like for a 300E model. Would appreciate any assistance. Thanks

The throttle linkage is made up of several parts, starting from the accelerator cable to the intake manifold. Those are 3 or 4 metal pieces with ball/sockets ends. The proper procedure is to disassemble those parts, give then a good clean-up with something like W40 and lubricate with ATF. it's a 30 minutes job.

Jack, thanks for the reply. So what I should do is:
1) Remove the air filter cover
2) Remove the air filter
3) Remove the air filter housing?
4)See where the accelerator cable is going and squirt the ATF fluid?

You should also remove the levers and lubricate the posts they rotate on. These can get sticky and cause high idle speeds.

No, just remove the whole air cleaner as an assembly=2 nuts over on the valve cover side of the air filter, and one nut that you just need to loosen, over on the other side of the air fliter. You'll also need to remove the rubber hose that connects the lid of the air cleaner to the side of the valve cover.

What is the best lubricant to use for this job?

From what I have read on the search the majority opinion is to use ATF fluid.

I'd like to do this on my 1991 300CE, M104 engine. Is the approach the same, i.e., under the air filter housing?

Don't forget those little plastic rollers. Mine were binding.
I used carb cleaner to clean, and white lithium spray grease to lube. Huge improvement, and no problems since.

I have nothing against the ATF, but have always used lithium for this application on various cars and had no problems. My reasoning is that the grease is thicker, so perhaps it will stay put longer. The spray form is also very convenient to use.

I use white grease because I live in wine country where the temp gets way down to 30 degrees F. I suggest ATF in cold climates to prevent throttle linkage from freezing.

Thought you'd like that,Gilly. This time of year I like to call my cousin in Waukesha and complain about the cold. The smile disappears with the next call to my old Navy buddy in Florida when he tells me it's close to 80 degrees and he's wearing shorts.
