Surging power windows, one won't close.

My 83 300DT was rear ended and among some of the weird things which happened in that instant was that the rear window can no longer have enough gear to make it to the top. I haven't looked at schematics yet, but I think the window motor may have moved on it which is causing it to not make it all the way. Trully what concerns me the most is that in both my 300s the rear windows kinda surge or jump all the way down. Is this common? What is causing it and how would one fix this? Is it foreshadowing the motor failure?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff M.

Not likely the motor.

What probably is happening is the plastic slider that attaches the metal window track to the cable has disintegrated. This will cause cable binding problems and unexpected actions with window operation.

The most common problem is that the window will not go all the way up. Gravity overcomes the problem with the window going down, but it's a jerky motion at best.

The rear window mechanisms have this plague...the front ones are an entirely different setup.

This is a DIY fix, but door panel removal is a requirement.

At best, if you haven't been playing with the windows much, the plastic pieces can be had for about $2 apiece. Otherwise, (as in my cases), the cable is pretty buggered up, and the entire assembly has to be replaced ($140 apiece).

Thanks for your reply G-Benz.

I don't see which parts you are talking about. The only thing I can clearly see which is plastic on the window assembly isthe adjustment for how far down it goes. While that little hole in the door isn't much of a window to look around at, I don't even see the cable your referring to. Is it towards the top?

Thanks again,
Jeff M.
