Help.. I need some cupholder ideas for an 89 300sel....
 

Try as I might.. I can't find a good place to put a couple of cupholders.. The ones that hook on the doors seem to be in the way..

Anyone have any good ideas?? Any slick little aftermarket ideas anywhere???

Fastlane might be able to get the same things aswell. They fit on the door quite well and are pretty functional.

I'll contact them..A cupholder seems like a trivial item, unless you have a cup of hot coffee in you hand..

... or a hot cup of coffee all over your crotch .... don't ask.

Most of the retrofit cup holders attach to the doors. There is one that can be mounted on the center console, but it won't go in if you have the glovebox there already.

I have the $79 unit in my 560SL It works fine. It can be attached to the door if you like ( you would buy 2 single units instead of the 1 double) . You do have to remove the door cover to screw it in from behind to make it strong.
I placed the unit in the center console. I would place it in the forward part so that you can use the forward holder without having to put the armrest up. I have to do this in my SL. Prior to screwing it in make sure that it is centered and have at least 1/2 inch from the woodgrain in the front. Make sure you can open the units and there will be no binding.
The 1/2 is to allow for cleaning. You'de be amazed what gets down between the holder and the center console.

Some of the more expensive units are nice, but more expensive.
I am happy with the unit I have.

I had a black fold-up plastic type that came with the 190E and it broke, I saw in the STAR someone wanted about $ 40.00 for the thing and I found the EXACT same thing in a RV store for $ 5.00 and in serveral colors, needless to say I replaced the original one with a exact copy and the screw holes lined up OK. Shop around.

I use a really cheap and low tech solution:

I have one of those $1.49 cupholders that are supposed to hang over the inside of your door. Only I hang it over the door of the glove box (closed). It's a little bit of a reach, but IMHO, it's better than the alternatives.

I saw a plastic(dark grey) cup holder in a cheapie shop and cost me only A$2.50. It sticks on the top of my car's centre console to the rear so it doesn't get in the way of my elbow resting on it. It is supplied with 3 double sided tapes and has 2 open holes on top for cups, drink cans with spring activated pressure spacers which hold down the cups and prevent spills. Lately they have disappeared off the shelves as they are very useful and cheap. The other thing I found also was the woodgrain(fake) perfume pack for the dashboard and it does look great as it almost matches my woodgrain on the console and dash.

here is an idea, some feedback would be appreciated. Would it be possible to mount a cupholder on the bottom of the arm rest, so that you would flip up the armrest and then open the cupholder in a vertical position? It would be attached to the wood or plastic??? plate that gives the armrest its strength. Would this work? Ive been thinking about it for a while, but I haven't been able to convince myself that making holes in the leather would work out.... I really only want 1 cupholder and I would not use it very often, but sometimes eating in the car just can't be helped and seatbelting my drink into the passenger seat doesn't really work out too well...

My solution on my 87 300 SDL (assuming the door panel is similar) is to use a coffee cup with a handle that is only attached at the top of the cup and with a gap towards the bottom. It slides over the edge of the storage compartment in the door. I have found 3 inexpensive stainless cups like this. 2 fit great, 1 is a little tight.

I have the $40 dollar ones, they came with my car. I have 6 in a wagon. I recently added a Zebrano wood one to my sedan -- found on eBay. Looks very nice.

Learn to drive with one hand? Come on man! CUPHOLDER! What an American! Food and drink should be enjoyed not guzzled while driving around.

Well.. I'll keep the stereo turned off too.. Any thing else I should try to do without on my commute????? Heat maybe???:D
