Hydraulic Lifters

I am in the middle of the comprehensive rebuild of a 1990 300E M103 engine. I have new hydraulic lifters to install but I cannot figure out how to get the lockring holding the old ones in out. I have tried prying it out without any luck. Is there any special tool or special way to remove the old hyrdraulic lifters? Thanks

The lifters are removed through the other end of the rocker arm! A small punch will knock out the old ones, but don't lose the little discs that sit up against the clip. When re-assembling, install the discs first. They need to be placed squarely in the bore. Simply push the new lifters into the bores with thumb pressure. You'll know when it's in all the way by the way it feels, trust me. If you have a valve tap afterwards don't worry. It takes some time for the new lifters to bleed out the air. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
