location of engine number?
can someone tell me where the engine number is stamped on my 1986 mercedes 190e 2.3? I found a serial number on the bottom, right left side of the engine block, not far from the alternator. it says 1020111301. Is this the correct number to know when i need to order parts from the parts distributor?
thanks, Peter V. |
Look in your owners manual. There are pics of where to find them.
Although, from the number you found you have a 8 valve 2,3 right? This motor is usually found as M102 in parts catalogue. Just remember to tell your shop what year engine was built and that it isn't a 16 valve engine. Greetings |
That number is probably a casting number, it isn't an engine number. The engine number will be stamped into a machined area of the block. It seems to me that its above the pan around the alternator, but we hardly ever view one anymore as the EPC gives the engine # and most of the other numbers through the chassis number and the data card.
List your chassis number and one of us will look up your engine number... then you can find it on your engine and verify originality. |
the chassis number for my mercedes 190e 2.3 8v is WDBA24D5GF152398. Hope this helps to find out my engine number.
Thanks, Peter V. |
190E 2.3 Sedan (chassis 201 024) (engine 102 985) 1984-1986
Go there http://www.mbz.org/sys/mbmodels/models for all the # you need. DAN |
Awesome! Thanks, Dan

Well, it didn't take long to know that wasn't a complete chassis number. The EPC puts in the WDB and the next group of four characters are always two letters and then two numbers. In your case it was A24D. Using my cheat sheet the 190E 2.4 201.024 has this 4 grouping (always) DA24.
So by remaking your number to WDBDA24D56F152398 the data card is found and your engine number should 102985 10 002636 and you have a manual trans number 717411 00 235605. You have MB "Tex" upholstery code 174 and paint code 040. |
The number you quoted sounds like the part number for the cylinder block casting.
Serial number is stamped on a machined face, on that model I think it's towards the read of the engine on the left side of the car just below the head. |
owner's manual
Found mine in my owners manual, it was on a sticker that was attached to a page.
Joel I found the stamped number on the block but could not make it out. Joel |
