blower selector doesnt move
 

hello all,
a while ago the fan for the blower in my 2.3 16 started making a clanking noise. After about a week of that, the noise went away, but the blower selector didnt want to move. I can force it into that 2 postion, but it wont budge to the third or fourth position. When i hit the button for the defrost, the fan blows full blast on the windshield and out of the vents to the cabin. I have no clue whats causing the switch to get stuck and preventing high powered blowing. Any suggestions on solution or even cause of problem? where do i start?

blower switches on 201 cars blow up all the time.
the only cure is to replace it.
