How much to renew your plates?
 

I bought a 1990 350SDL over the holidays and drove it up from Florida to Michigan. Well, I went to register it and get some plates for it today. When the lady at the Secretary of States told me how much I had to pay for registration and plates for 1 year, my jaw hit the floor.

$232!!!!!

I was told I am going to have to pay $211 each year to renew my plates every year. The SOS of Michigan is raking us over the coals.

Just curious how much everyone else has to pay in their respective states?

I lived in Mi for 12 years, plates here in Oregon are $30.00 for two years and you can renew by mail!!!!!!!

Here in Virginia I recently paid around $250 to register an E320. State tag renewals are $29/year, city tag renewal is $26/year and the city collects a tax of 5% of the blue book value per year.

In Florida it's about $32.00 to renew the plates on my 300D, and $25.50 for my Hyundai.

You can renew by mail.

I fail to see the logic of charging to pay for the roads based on the Blue Book value of the car. The weight, perhaps, but the value?

In Wisconsin it's $47.50 and you can renew on-line.

Certain state legislators have proposed doubling the fee, but that may be a long time coming. (knock on wood) :rolleyes:

Here in Georgia, I pay around $700 for my Corvette, $130 for my 190e, I haven't had to renew the plates on the E420 yet.

Here in California, for the 1995 E320 wagon it is $190. They reduced the registration fees starting I believe two years ago during the boom. It would of been $270!

Whether new or used, first registration you have to pay an 8.25% sales tax. The DMV is fairly kind regarding used, but the new is a major hit.

In Kentucky, you pay sales tax on the price paid when you buy the car and register for the first time. 6% tax. Then every year, when you renew your plates, you pay $12 for the plate, a couple bucks for the clerk fee and then a property tax on the cars NADA value as of Jan. 1 that year. Property tax varies county to county. Figure about 1.25%. Probably half of the tax is the school system tax. Property taxes are about 40% of the funding source for schools in KY. If you are young figure your kids will probably benefit directly today or soon. If you are past the kids age, just remember: dumb kids = low incomes = low FICA revenues = no Social Security = dog food for dinner + grandkids who can't even spell dog food. I've got six cars (yeah, I'm crazy) and the tax and insurance bills are tough, but my family all ride/drive in the safety of MB and I still have 2 4x4 trucks to pull camper or get up this hill I live on. Plus, I really don't want the SL out on the snow. Could be worse I guess. Across the river in Cincinnati, they have low plate costs but high real estate taxes. Taxes are so high they collect twice a year. I figure if they hit people with the whole year's bill at one time, the folks would burn down the statehouse

I also live in MI and the plates on my '97 S500 were roughly $325. (And we get such nice roads for our money!)

The good news is that the Feds consider this a personal property tax (the license fee is based on the base price of the car when new) and as such it can be written off on your taxes. (Not much consolation really.)

Here's a thought... I live in Michigan and just bought my E320 last summer. To drive it, I transferred plates from my winter car ($11). Since I switch off cars seasonally (I can't afford to spend money on an expensive Benz only to have it rust away in the winter), I can renew plates on my winter car ($44) in April (my birthday), then transfer plates to my Benz for the summer.

Yes, the write-off is only a small consolation. The tax savings is only for those that itemize - and even then it's roughly only a 25% rebate.

Here, for most cars and light trucks in non-commerical use, the fee is $69 per year for your registration and plates, both of which must be renewed once a year.

Last year the fee was $52.

'02 CLK - about $750 annually
'91 300CE - about $250 annually

.....and I live in one of the 'less-expensive' outlying counties!

Just thought I would give you the UK comparator:

Our equivalent to the plate fee is the vehicle excise duty, which is around $225 per year (There are exceptions like if your car only has one cylinder and burns sandal wood). To obtain this your vehicle must pass a road worthiness examination if your vehicle is more than 3 years old. The fee for the examination varies but lets say $45 but most car owners will pick up a bill for work needed to rectify faults and most smile if they only have to pay exam fee!

However our real tax sting is in what we pay at the pump which is a combination of fuel price, fuel duty and value added tax. We currently pay around $5.25 per UK gallon for ordinary unleaded and I believe around 80% of that is the tax take. So, I suppose the average motorist covers 10,000 miles per annum at an average of 30 mpg (I get 26) so total fuel tax $1400 per year

I hope UK Govt do not attempt the 'property tax' approach - because they would apply that as an addition. We would have to emulate the tea party if that was the case.

All in all we pay a helluva lot and our roads are s***!

I have considered campaigning for the man with the red flag to be re-introduced it would speed up city driving by an order of magnitude.

No paying property tax on cars in Texas...unless you lease.

I pay about $52 for the VW, the W124 and R129, but $70 for the W163. I guess fees are based on GVW.
